It’s exceptional to think the top two favourites in the men’s championship are 36-year-old Roger Federer and 31-year-old Rafael Nadal.
I’m a huge fan of Federer for what he has done for the game which has just been unbelievable and at the age of 36, he’s still a very important player in the game and I hope he continues.
I was disappointed to hear he had an injury and I hope it’s not going to be ongoing because there’s a lot of tournaments along with this grand slam which we need him to play.
His record is outstanding, it’s just unbelievable.
As for Rafa, he’s always a dangerous player and I think he certainly deserves to be equal favourite with Federer even allowing for his loss to Nick Kyrgios in Cincinnati.
I was happy to see that result, not so much for Rafa to lose, but for Kyrgios to play so well and win that match.
It shows what kind of a player he can be if he keeps his mind on the game and doesn’t get distracted and lose concentration.
He just needs to keep his mind focused on playing well.
Kyrgios hasn’t played a lot because of various reasons so it was good for him to come back and play so well in Cincinnati.
If he’s seeded inside the top 16, that is going to help and protect him to some degree in the tournament.
If he gets lucky with his draw, there’s no reason why he’s not going to be involved deeper in the tournament.
When he gets to play those guys in the quarter-finals, he’s got as much chance as anybody.
The challengers to Federer and Nadal include the likes of Alexander Zverev, Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov, Domimic Thiem, Juan Martin Del Potro and Milos Raonic but Marin Cilic is the leading chance for me.
He’s a former US Open champion and his performance at Wimbledon was pretty good, so if he’s fit and well, he should certainly be a very dangerous player to the top-seeded players.
Zverev is outstanding for his age and having beaten Federer and done so well, he’s going to be a very dangerous player.
However, it will be a big ask for him to win it at 20-years-old.
The other players are all dangerous on their day but I don’t see them winning the tournament.
There’s no reason why Federer can’t win and I would put money on Federer.
His form is still pretty good and as long as he’s 100 percent fit and ready, there’s no reason to think he won’t be playing in the final and being the favourite to win it.
He’ll probably have seven fairly tough gruelling matches to play, but hopefully there’s some easy matches for him along the way.
Roger Federer 2.40, Rafael Nadal 3.70, Alexander Zverev 9.00, Andy Murray 11.00, Nick Kyrgios 16.00, Grigor Dimitrov 18.00, Marin Cilic 21.00, Dominic Thiem 21.00, Juan Martin Del Potro 41.00, Milos Raonic 41.00, Tomas Berdych 71.00, Gael Monfils 101.00
