We take a look at today’s UFC 217 Sydney Fight night and give our tips and selections for each of the main fights on what looks to be a quality card of UFC. View our UFC 2017 tips and selections below.
FABRICIO WERDUM V MARCIN TYBURA – HEAVYWEIGHT
It’s hard to understand why Fabricio Werdum accepted this fight. An easy paycheck and a trip to Australia maybe? In any case, it’s a real mismatch. Werdum is one of the top-level guys in the heavyweight division while Marcin Tybura’s biggest scalp is Andrei Arlovski.
Werdum won’t play around. Expect him to work inside and grapple early. Considering the short work he made of Walt Harris at UFC216 the $5.50 on Round 1 submission looks tempting for a value bet.
BEC RAWLINGS V JESSICA-ROSE CLARK – WOMEN’S FLYWEIGHT
Aussie Bec Rawlings is moving up to Flyweight against late fill-in Jessica-Rose Clark who is making her UFC debut.
Both women will be happy to stand and strike for the duration of the fight. Clark has enjoyed a series of fights where she was clearly the superior striker but that won’t be the case here. Rawlings is quick, technically sound and will pick Clark apart for a decision win.
TIM MEANS V BELAL MUHAMMAD – WELTERWEIGHT
With 36 fights under his belt at only 33 years of age Tim “The Dirty Bird” Means is one of the sport’s great grinders.
Expect The Dirty Bird to put on a kickboxing clinic against Belal Muhammad. If the fight gets pushed to the fence watch Means unload vicious elbows.
JAKE MATTHEWS V BOJAN VELICKOVIC – WELTERWEIGHT
Aussie Jake Matthews makes his return to the Octagon after a year-long absence. He’ll be up against Serbian Bojan Velickovic.
Velickovic is the superior striker so the fight all depends on Matthews’ ability to complete the takedown. Reports are that his rehab has gone well and a year out means they haven’t rushed it. We’re expecting Matthews to be fit and firing for this fight. The uncertainty around his year out of the game is giving us enhanced odds.
ELIAS THEODOROU V DANIEL KELLY – MIDDLEWEIGHT
Australia’s ultimate cult hero Dan Kelly takes on Elias Theodorou who’s more well known for his haircut than his fighting credentials.
Dan thrives on being the underdog and at $3.05 looks great value against a guy who looks destined to remain a mid-card fighter his whole career.
Tip: Dan Kelly
ALEXANDER VOLKANOVSKI V SHANE YOUNG – FEATHERWEIGHT
Alexander Volkanovski is a home-grown hero having competed extensively in the Australian Fighting Championship and other domestic competitions.
This looks like a fight designed to get the crowd going early. Shane Young is making his UFC debut and will be no match for The Hulk.
