We take a look at the first of the NFL matches for the 2017/2018 season with the Patriots taking on the Chiefs. This looks an offensive team vs a defensive team contest. Will Brady win out? Either way we can’t wait for the NFL to kick-off.
When: Friday, September 8, 10.30am (AEST),
Where: Gillette Stadium
A great match-up to open the season on Thursday night Football (Friday AEST).
I’m expecting a closer game than some might predict mainly as the defending champions, the Patriots and Tom Brady’s passing game (without Julian Edelman) comes up against a stout Chiefs defence.
At age 40, it doesn’t look like he is slowing down just yet and with the Patriots ready and re-loaded for another tilt at the title, it looks like they’ll have all the weapons with the signing of WR Brandin Cooks and a healthy TE Rob Gronkowski.
The loss of Edelman will certainly be felt at times but Bill Belichick is a future Hall of Fame coach who knows how to prepare his team regardless who takes the field.
At the Chiefs, it seems a QB controversy has been averted with Alex Smith named the starter but Patrick Mahomes looms ready to step in if their season starts to derail.
Their strength is their defence but if they are to be a chance in this game, they must stifle Brady’s influence and win the turnover battle with their two Pro-Bowlers, starting DB’s Marcus Peters and Eric Berry.
On offence, RB Spencer Ware is out for the season (here’s looking at you rookie Kareem Hunt), so there’ll be a heavy reliance on Smith and their two Pro-Bowlers on offense, WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce.
Even though I think the Chiefs will be back in the play-offs, this will prove to be too difficult for them to overcome in what is a tough schedule to begin the season.
