Honduras vs Australia Preview

Heading into this Asian qualifier Intercontinental play-off, I’m actually feeling both nervous and excited.

I’m nervous because of what’s at stake and excited for the players because this is the reason they become professionals to experience situations like this.

This is such a massive occasion where the whole country will be right behind them.

That’s a great feeling.

Logistically, this match in Honduras is an absolute nightmare because the Soccceroos are based all over the world.

Honduras are lucky to have so many squad members being local.

They’ll be primed in game 1 and that is what we need to be ready for.

This bout has a rematch and it’s vital that we’re still in the fight for the return leg.

It’s imperative that we’re in this game for the second leg and the aim for this game is to be hard to beat and try and nick an away goal.

The second leg being at home can be a huge advantage if we perform and are in a good position.

I expect Ange to have his team ready to make this a slog for Honduras.

Every bit of energy they use can be a deciding factor here in Australia.

Tim Cahill wouldn’t be expected to start this one but having him fit could be very important in the final part of the game.

If he isn’t fit, then we need whoever that is brought on to do the same job making an impact.

He’ll be given every chance to make this but most importantly he needs to be ready to take part in the game in Australia.

The area where Ange tries to get the upper hand is by getting overloads in midfield and outnumbering his opponent.

At home, Honduras adopt a 1-4-2-3-1 formation and if we can get bodies around the ball in the middle of the park and pick passes out when the time is right with good timing of forward runs, we can cause some issues.

I have to stress at this level the importance of set pieces and quality delivery to good areas.

I’m sure we’ll work hard to be dangerous on these set plays.

The Verdict

My concern only here is if we were to concede an early goal.

That would really test our character and away from home with such a passionate fan base it can be hard to stop the flow.

Both teams can get on the scoresheet and my heart is saying a 1-1 draw but this could end in a 2-1 win to Honduras.
