We take a look at the key contenders in Saturday’s Hawkesbury Gold Cup at Hawkesbury racecourse. View our tips and preview for the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.
Vanbrugh ($11): Fair effort in Newcastle Newmarket (1400m) when sixth behind Happy Clapper. Looked good in a Rosehill trial win since that run. Hard to catch, but should be nearing his peak now.
Fabrizio ($7.00): He was favourite last start when a disappointing second last behind Kellyville Flyer in Benchmark 100 at Randwick. Led and did not get a lot of peace, but should have done better. Trialled strongly this track since so sharp improvement would not surprise, especially around the tight turning circuit.
Spectroscope ($5.50 favourite): European import going great guns in his first Australian preparation. He won two in a row, including Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) before finishing midfield in the Group 1 Doncaster. Not knocked about in Warwick Farm trial, freshened and looks ideal race.
Pajaro ($17): Had a wide gate last start and lumped 60.5kgs when fourth to Kellyville Flyer, Randwick Benchmark 100. He went back from the start and was ridden for luck. He then loomed up in the straight, tired late, but under the circumstances, there was a lot of merit in the run. Up in grade here, but nice drop in weight.
Ruling Dynasty ($16): Super effort when fifth behind Kellyville Flyer. Didn’t appear to handle the going and lost his spot from the 100m and was last on the home turn. Finished powerful late and was close to the outside fence. He will be much better suited on a good track.
Best: Fabrizio, Vanbrugh, Spectroscope.
