We take a look at the Field for the Group 1 Golden Rose which is set to be run at Rosehill on Saturday and we give our tips and bets for the race as well as a look at each of the key runners in the race. View our Golden Rose preview below.
Golden Rose, (Group 1), Race 7, 1400m
The Golden Rose was first run in 2003 and became a Group 1 in 2009.
Since 2003, there was one filly who won the race, Forensics, and that was the year after EI when the race was run in the Autumn.
Since becoming a Group 1, 18 fillies have raced for just two placings.
Five of the last nine winners have come through the Run To The Rose.
Zero of the last nine winners have been in their first preparation.
On pace, runners Formality, Trapeze Artist, Gold Standard and Menari are all drawn wide with Perast to provide the pace from the inside.
I see a strong pace and the question for Josh Parr on Menari will be does he look to push forward or try to get in midfield.
I’d suggest the later.
Pariah will also be looking to find a spot midfield from barrier 12.
All in all, a very interesting map.
Convincing winner of his first two runs from the spell in consecutive PBs.
He has to repeat again out to 1400m with surely the inevitable Everest slot opening up for three weeks later.
He has met Pariah three times to beat him home twice, their SPs in the Run To The Rose were 2.35 and 3.8 with Menari the victory by 1.5L.
Steps to 1400m for the first time but is a colt who will relish the extra distance.
Did nothing wrong in the Run To The Rose and the Snowdens are renowned for peaking their horses on Grand Final day.
I see his best at around 1L off Menari, but he’s building to a likely PB in this race.
Merchant Navy (8.00)
The X-Factor in the race coming from Melbourne off a strong last start effort in the McNeil beating Bookerwho in turn performed well behind Catchy last week.
Unbeaten, but his first time the Sydney way is the major question mark.
Has the luxury of an inside barrier and while he’ll be off midfield, the field will likely fan and give him a chance.
Comes into this off 28 days which in itself is somewhat unusual.
Ridden stone cold at his last start before sustaining a very long sprint to just fail to run down Addictive Nature.
First prep and just a fair recent trial suggest this is all too soon.
As noted, fillies have a poor record in the Golden Rose but she has been very strong in her two Sydney runs this prep.
The pace is against her but she has the class to fight it out for the placings.
Doubt she can sit on a hot pace and win the race.
