AFL News:

Daniel Menzel’s AFL future at Geelong is even more uncertain after their shock decision to drop him for the qualifying final against Richmond.

The forward had played 17 games this season and kicked an accurate 38.14.

He and Patrick Dangerfield are equal-second among the Cats’ goalkickers this season behind key forward Tom Hawkins.

But Menzel also ranks poorly among forwards for defensive pressure.

There was already intrigue surrounding his future, given Menzel is on a one-year deal.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said last month that they would like to keep Menzel, adding the club tabled a two-year deal earlier this year.

The coach also said a mutual decision had been to put the contract issue to one side until this season was over.

Looming large over Geelong’s list management is former star Gary Ablett, given the widespread speculation that he will make another bid to leave Gold Coast and return to his old club.

Menzel has overcome four knee reconstructions to play 35 games in the last two seasons, for a career total of 58.

He was named as an emergency for Friday night’s blockbuster.

The Cats will regain captain Joel Selwood, who has made a speedy return from ankle surgery for his first game since round 20.

They also dropped Wylie Buzza and recalled Zach Guthrie.

Richmond midfielder Josh Caddy will return from a hamstring injury and Oleg Markov had made way for him.

Caddy suffered the injury in round 21 – the first time he had played against Geelong after leaving the Cats at the end of last season.
