The Bulldogs begin their campaign as defending premiers against the Magpies on Friday night. The Bulldogs are installed as heavy favourites on the back of their maiden premiership and went 2-1 in the JLT Community Series.

The Bulldogs lost Jordan Roughead in their opening match against the Demons with a hamstring injury that will impact their ruck stocks with Tom Campbell also missing the start of the season. Tom Boyd will have to carry the bulk of the ruck work in their absence and it will be interesting to see whether the Bulldogs increase his roughly 50/50 split between the forward line and the ruck.
Collingwood have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week after Jordan De Goey injured his hand in a fight and then blamed it on his dog. The Pies expect Scott Pendlebury to be fit after ruling himself out of their last JLT clash with achilles soreness but Levi Greenwood (hip) and Jamie Elliot (ankle) are out, whilst Daniel Wells is still 2-3 weeks away from pushing for selection.
The Bulldogs won both their matches against Collingwood last year by 21 (Round 10) and 3 points (Round 21) respectively. Many are predicting that the Western Bulldogs will suffer a hangover in the early rounds and perform similar to Sydney who are quiet early before hitting their straps as they awaken ready for the finals. This discounts both the return of Robert Murphy who will be extremely motivated to restart his career after his knee injury and the injection of Stewart Crameri and Travis Cloke into the forward line, with the latter having a point to prove against his old club.
