The two best teams of the inaugural Women’s AFL season will meet in the Grand Final at Metricon Stadium this Saturday as the exciting season draws to a close. Brisbane have been the best team all season long and will be installed as the favourites for the Grand Final, but will certainly be up against a tough Adelaide Crows opponent.
The Lions didn’t lose a game all season, their opponents have found it hard to stop the run and carry game the Lions bring each week. They possess a mixture of exciting talent, with Tayla Harris one of the best key forwards in the game, and will again be a crucial for the Lions if they are going to be the Premiers this season. Marquee player Harris has only kicked 3 goals for the season, but has been a real presence on the ground for the Lions all season long.
Kate McCarthy has been huge for the Lions also, kicking 9 goals from the eight games, and will again be prominent again. The Lions will back in their strong forward setup to be able to overpower the Crows defense, while the midfield battle is an intriguing one on the historic night for the AFL.
Adelaide are a tough proposition for the Lions though, as they have some raw talent of their own. Erin Phillips is one of the leagues best players, having kicked eight goals this season, and after winning a silver medal at the Olympics before taking up the chance to play AFL Football. Phillips has gathered more disposals this season than anyone else playing in the Final, and could be the difference.
The biggest danger for the Lions will be Crows key forward Sarah ‘Tex’ Perkins, who has been one of the best stories in AFLW this season and has been huge for her side, kicking 11 goals. It will be interesting to see what tactics the Lions take to try and stop the play maker, but expect Perkins to have an impact regardless.
It is set up to be an exciting Grand Final, despite the ground’s debacle that marred the week, the women have put on a great spectacle this season, and all of them will be better for the experience. It is the two best teams of the season locking horns. However only one can win, and it looks on paper like the Crows have the more dangerous players, even though the Lions are a balanced lineup. Expecting a tight contest throughout, before the South Australian girls take it in a close one.
