Brisbane went within a Super Over of last year’s decider and look well placed for another strong campaign.
The Heat received a huge boost with Chris Lynn (pictured above), the Player of the Tournament in consecutive seasons, set to be available after a strong recovery from shoulder surgery.
Lynn’s 309 runs in just five games last season came at the incredible strike rate of 177.58 and opening bowlers will have their work cut out trying to contain both he and ex-Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum, who also comes off a prodigious BBL06 (323 runs at 46, SR 170.8). Mitchell Swepson has shown plenty of promise and, if all goes to plan, will have plenty of runs to defend with Ben Cutting’s skill in the death overs also likely to play a role. If anything, the Heat need to improve upon their home record having won just one match at the Gabba last year. Long considered the glamour franchise of the league, the Stars may not quite have the weight of expectation this time around but still look one of the stronger sides on paper. The addition of last season’s top runscorer Ben Dunk (364 at 52) from Adelaide compliments a batting lineup also boasting the in-form Glenn Maxwell, Luke Wright and pantomime villain Kevin Pietersen. In a team loaded with all-rounders, quickie Scott Boland is an underrated presence and provides a legitimate new ball threat with Adam Zampa also among the wickets in their most recent trial.
Expect a high scoring contest and a shootout between two potent top orders.
Brisbane Heat $1.95
Melbourne Stars $1.85
Tip: Melbourne Stars $1.85
