Australia round off the opening phase of their World Cup tournament with a maiden clash against Lebanon in Sydney on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos have yet to hit top gear and didn’t have things entirely their own way against a plucky French side in their last fixture.

An ability to score back-to-back tries ultimately blew the scoreboard beyond the half-century mark but, all things considered, it wasn’t the most fluid 80 minutes of football we have seen.

Afforded the luxury of tinkering with his squad, coach Mal Meninga has made a number of changes again in an attempt to settle on his best line-up ahead of the knockout stage.

Valentine Holmes is given a chance to shine in his preferred fullback position with Dane Gagai to return on one of the wings.

A late scratching last week owing to personal issues, James Maloney comes in at no.6 for what could be his only meaningful contribution to the event.

Along with Cooper Cronk, he’ll get a dominant platform to work off with Meninga naming close to a full-strength pack.

Opponents Lebanon have given a great account of themselves thus far and can count on plenty of support in the harbour city.

NRL regulars Robbie Farah, Mitchell Moses and Tim Mannah headline a side containing a number of part-timers but they have played with as much passion as anyone.

No stranger to controversy, Farah was again in the news after lodging a biting allegation in last week’s hard-fought defeat against the English.

The Verdict

The handicap looks tricky but it’s worth noting that Australia have conceded points in both matches to date and Lebanon certainly have the potency to score.

That might require Australia to post upwards of 50 points again to cover the spread and with the threat of rain about it might be beyond them.

Unibet Odds:
