Australian Open Day 3 Preview

AUSTRALIANS Sam Stosur, Matt Ebden and Casey Dellacqua are all in Australian Open second round action on Wednesday along with the current women's No. 1 and a host of other top names.

Players in action on the third day at the Australian Open will be hoping for cooler conditions after Day 2 on Tuesday was played in scorching 40-plus degree conditions.

As a result, seven players weren’t able to complete their matches either due to genuine injuries or problems associated with the heat including John Isner, Radek Stepanek and then finally Australian's Bernard Tomic after he lost the first set against Rafael Nadal in the evening session.

Now as Round 2 gets underway on Wednesday, only two male seeds are no longer in action and both retired due to injury – 12th-seeded German veteran Tommy Haas and giant American 13th-seed Isner (13).

Meanwhile the women's draw has suffered far more casualties with Petra Kvitova (No. 6 seed), Sara Errani (7), Roberta Vinci (12), Svetlana Kuznetsova (19), Sorana Cirstea (21), Elena Vesnina (23) and Kaia Kanepi (24) all gone in the first round.

Notable men in action on Day 2 include Novak Djokovic, Matt Ebden, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, Tommy Robredo, Jerzy Janowicz, Fabio Fognini and Mikhail Youzhny.

Meanwhile, top women playing on Wednesday include Li Na, Serena Williams, Sam Stosur, Casey Dellacqua, Sabine Lisicki, Flavia Pennetta, Angelique Kerber and Ana Ivanovic.

The day of the biggest names on Rod Laver Arena begins at 11am EST with two-time Australian Open runner-up and French Open champion Li Na taking on Swiss world No. 187 Belinda Bencic.

Up next is world No. 1 and 17-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams doing battle with Serbia's world No. 104 Vesna Dolonc.

And then the Rod Laver Arena day session ends with world No. 2 and four-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic faces off with Argentina's Leonardo Mayer.

The Rod Laver Arena night session then sees two Australians in action when 17th-seed Sam Stosur takes on the in-form Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria coming off winning the Sydney International.

The night then concludes with South African-born West Australian Matt Ebden facing No. 28 seed Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

The day on Hisense Arena begins at 11am EST as well with seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych facing off with Frenchman Kenny de Schepper.

World No. 3 David Ferrer will then follow that match when the Spaniard takes on Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

It is then time for another Australian to be in action with Casey Dellacqua taking on 18th-seeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.

The day will finish on Hisense Arena with a doubles encounter featuring Australian greats Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter taking on American Eric Butorac and South African Raven Klaasen.

The day on Margaret Court Arena begins with German 15th-seed Sabine Lisicki playing Romania's Monica Niculescu.

Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta will then play Portugal's Monica Puig.

The women's second round matches on Margaret Court Arena continues with ninth-seeded German Angelique Kerber facing Russia's All Kudryavtseva.

The day will finish on Margaret Court Arena with two men's second round matches starting with Latvia's No. 23 seed Ernests Gulbis playing American Sam Querrey.

Then it's eight-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka taking on Columbia's Alejandro Falla.

Court 2 begins with a fascinating men's second round match-up featuring ninth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet taking on former world No. 3, 32-year-old Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

Up next is 17th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo playing Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

Court 2 then turns to women's Round 2 action with Canadian No. 30 seed Eugenie Bouchard playing French veteran Virginie Razzano

Then former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic hits the floor to face German Annika Beck

Other notable men's Round 2 matches include Jerzy Janowicz facing Pablo Andujar, Fabio Fognini taking on Jarkko Nieminen, Jeremy Chardy battling Alexandr Dolgopolov, Mikhail Youzhny facing Florian Mayer and Dmitry Tursunov playing Denis Istomin

Meanwhile other women's second round match-ups include Yanina Wickmayer facing Alison Riske, Jie Zheng playing Madison Keys, Lauren Davis battling Julia Goerges, Karolina Pliskova facing Daniela Hantuchova and Lucie Hradecka playing Lucie Safarova.
