Suns shine; Wizards beat Pistons again

WASHINGTON continued Detroit's miserable run in the NBA on Monday night while the Phoenix Suns thumped the LA Clippers to show they are a team to be reckoned with.

There were seven matches in the NBA on Monday night with Washington again beating Detroit 106-99, Chicago downing Memphis 95-91, Miami beating Denver 97-94, Dallas downing Minnesota 100-98, New Orleans upsetting Portland 110-108, Utah beating Charlotte 83-80 and Phoenix thumping the Clippers 107-88.

Washington won its second consecutive game over the struggling Detroit to have put a seven-game losing run to the Pistons long behind them.

The Wizards won by seven points in Detroit on Monday night with John Wall leading the way with 29 points and seven assists.

Trevor Ariza added 15 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and four assists for Washington with Bradley Beal scoring 13 points, Nene 11 and Martell Webster 10.

Greg Monroe worked hard for the Pistons with 22 points and 10 rebounds while fellow big man Andre Drummond had 16 points and 16 boards.

Brandon Jennings finished with 15 points and 14 assists, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 17 points, Josh Smith 16 (nine rebounds, six assists) and Kyle Singler 11.

Chicago scored its first road win over a western conference team this season on its seventh attempt with a solid four-point victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jimmy Butler led the way for the Bulls with 26 points while shooting 6-of-10 from the field, 2-of-3 from long range and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.

Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago with DJ Augustin adding 10 points off the bench.

Point guard Mike Conley tried hard for the Grizzlies with 26 points, nine assists, six rebounds and six steals with James Johnson finishing with 13 points, Tony Allen 13 points, Kosta Koufos 12 points and Zach Randolph 10 to go with 10 rebounds despite shooting just 4-of-15 from the floor.

Denver continued its losing slide this time falling to the two-time defending champion Miami at home with the Heat dominating the final period to end up winning a tight contest by three points.

LeBron James led the way for the Heat with 26 points, 10 assists and six rebounds while shooting 5-of-9 from three-point range.

Chris Bosh added 17 points, Ray Allen 13, Dwyane Wade 12 and Mario Chalmers 10 to go with nine assists.

Ty Lawson did all he could for the struggling Nuggets with 26 points and seven assists with Wilson Chandler finishing with 13 points and six rebounds, Darrell Arthur 13 points, JJ Hickson 12 points and 11 boards and Randy Foye 11 points and seven assists off the bench.

Dallas withstood a massive third quarter fight back to beat the Timberwolves in Minnesota on Monday night to see the Mavs improve to an 18-13 record on the season and to hold a three-game lead over the 15-16 T'Wolves in the battle for the eighth spot in the western conference.

Shawn Marion led the way for the Mavericks with a season-high 32 points to go with six rebounds and three assists on the back of 14-of-19 shooting from the field, and 4-of-6 from long range.

Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points also for Dallas while Monta Ellis had nine points and 10 assists, and Brandon Wright 14 points off the bench.

Kevin Love did all he could for the Timberwolves finishing with 36 points and 11 rebounds with Kevin Martin adding 19 points, Nikola Pekovic 18 and Corey Brewer 16.

Portland suffered a surprise defeated in New Orleans at the hands of the Pelicans on Monday night with the Blazers' defence again unable to stop an opponent.

New Orleans scored 110 points and it is the 13th time in December that Portland has allowed 100 points with an average of 111.7 in its past four games with the Blazers suffering their first losing run of the season that so far sees them sit on a still impressive 24-7 record.

Point guard Jrue Holiday was the star for the Pelicans finishing with 31 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds while Anthony Davis also had a big night with 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Tyreke Evans also contributed 20 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench for New Orleans with Ryan Anderson scoring 13 points.

Portland point guard Damian Lillard finished with 29 points and five assists with power forward LaMarcus Aldridge adding 28 points and eight rebounds.

Wesley Matthews also scored 18 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Trail Blazers.

Utah continued its dominance over Charlotte winning a 10th straight match over the Bobcats as the Jazz won by three points at home on Monday night.

Point guard Trey Burke led the way for Utah with 21 points and five assists while hitting 3-of-6 from downtown.

Alec Burks contributed 14 points and six rebounds for the Jazz off the bench with Marvin Williams adding 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Derrick Favors 13 points.

Gerald Henderson top-scored for the Bobcats with 19 points while Al Jefferson added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Kemba Walker 18 points, six boards and four assists.

Phoenix sent yet another message to the rest of the NBA that it can't be taken lightly this season despite being predicted to be the west's worst team.

The Suns thumped the Clippers at the Staples Centre by 19 points on Monday night to improve to a 19-11 record on the season.

Goran Dragic led the way for the Suns with 26 points, eight assists and five steals with Gerald Green adding 21 points, PJ Tucker 12, Channing Frye 12 and Markieff Morris 11 to go with 12 rebounds and three assists.

Blake Griffin finished with 15 points and five rebounds for the Clippers with Jamal Crawford adding 15 points, Matt Barnes 13, Darren Collison 11 and Chris Paul 11 to go with seven assists and four rebounds.
