"Tim Bresnan has been added to the England Test squad following his recovery from a back injury, and is available for selection," the England board said on Monday night in a statement.
The 21-Test veteran is putting pressure on Chris Tremlett in England's attack for the second Ashes Test starting on Thursday.
Australia lead the five-match series one-nil.
Bresnan broke down with a stress fracture of his back in August 2013.
The 28-year-old claimed four first-innings wickets and scored an unbeaten half-century for England's Performance Program side against a Queensland 2nd XI last week in Brisbane.
Bresnan has claimed 67 wickets at 32.10 and has a Test batting average of 30.05.
Britain's Daily Mail says Bresnan is definitely "in the reckoning" to play his first Test since the fourth match of the 2013 Ashes series in the UK in August.
