SOUTH Sydney star forward Sam Burgess has taken the early guilty plea for a high shot on Mitchell Pearce, meaning he will miss the Rabbitohs' clash with Cronulla next weekend.

Burgess was cited for the contact on Pearce during Souths' big opening round win over the Sydney Roosters on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium.

The Rabbitohs big forward was placed on report midway through the second half of the NRL season's opening match.

Burgess plead guilty to a grade one careless high tackle.

He would have avoided suspension with the 95-point sanction, were it not for 38 carryover points from previous offenses on his record.

Burgess will now miss the Rabbitohs' Round 2 match against the Sharks, who pulled off an emotional win over Gold Coast at Sharks Stadium on Sunday night.

He was the only player to be charged from the NRL action over Round 1.
