HAWTHORN management is confident Cyril Rioli will play in the AFL season opening blockbuster against Geelong despite the ace play-maker suffering an ankle injury.

And gun recruit Brian Lake will not be wheeled out against his old club Western Bulldogs in Friday night's NAB Cup clash at Etihad Stadium.

Lake, 31, pulled up sore with a calf strain from his first official outing of any kind with the Hawks against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium in Queensland on Saturday.

Lake's first engagement with his old clubis now out into Round 127 in mid-July when the Hawks will host the Dogs at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

Rioli emerged from the Hawks NAB Cup trip north with ankle soreness and has been placed in a moonboot as a precaution.

Hawks football manager Mark Evans reported on Tuesday that the potential match-winner would spend most of the week on the protective boot and be out of action for up to a fortnight.

Rioli was one of the Hawks stars in surprise successive losses to Gold Coast by one point from an after-the-siren minor score and then went down to Brisbane by 21 points.

The Hawks were among favourites to win the pre-season competition, but their two losses virtually rule out any hope a grand final in mid-March.

The Hawks round out their NAB commitments with outings against the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne and then Richmond in Launceston when Rioil looks a certain on-looker.

“He’ll wear a moonboot for a couple of days to protect the ankle, and we expect he’ll miss a couple of weeks," Evans told Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper.

The Hawks also lost tough utility Paul Puopolo with an knee injury but scans cleared him of any severe damage.

Puopolo, 25, is almost certain to miss the opening clash of the season against the Cats at the MCG with prospects of up to an eight-week layoff.

Hawthorn has not beaten Geelong in their last nine epic shootouts since the Cats unexpectedly lost the 2008 grand final to the Hawks.
