Brisbane and GWS in NAB top eight

KEVIN Sheedy and his Greater Western Sydney Giants are in the AFL top eight for a first time.

And Brisbane are headed for a virtual "qualifying final" against power outfit Collingwood at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne in a fortnight if the Lions can topple the Giants on Saturday.

Decorated Lions champions Jonathan Brown and Simon Black are expected to rejoin their line-up after sitting out the triangular wins on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

The Lions head to Wagga for a shootout with the improved and bulkier Giants on Saturday night with distinct prospects of retaining an unbeaten NAB Cup start.

The Pies are in Perth on Sunday against West Coast and then host the Lions a week later.

A victory over the fledgling Giants and then a showdown with the Pies could ultimately decide a grand final berth in the middle of next month.

Brisbane is one of only three established AFL clubs, along with West Coast and Fremantle no to have won a pre-season title.

With an impressive and historic first ever win over intended ultimate arch local rival Sydney at Blacktown on Sunday evening, the Giants sit seventh on the ladder after NAB series first round of triangular games.

The Giants completely dominated a lackluster Sydney, with budding rising stars Toby Greene, Jonathon Patton and Jeremy Cameron all supremely dominant.

The Giants were also impressive despite a narrow two-point loss to top-four contenders Carlton as AFL coaching great Mick Malthouse in charge at the Blues for a first time.

Malthouse's Blues are among only four units to have won both games in their opening engagements to sit second and heading for a clash with Fremantle at Etihad Stadium in the next Round.

Brisbane are somewhat surprise early NAB series leaders with two strong wins over Hawthorn, by 21 points and then local rival Gold Coast by 33 points on Saturday night.
