The diminutive opener copped the untimely injury during a training session in Perth, ahead of the first ODI clash with the Windies at the WACA on Friday.
Warner, 26, had been facing fiery quick Mitchell Johnson in the nets when the injury occurred, after which he was sent to hospital to have X-rays.
Cricket Australia officials later declared the scans were precautionary, despite Warner being in a lot of pain as he left training.
Warner played in the final three matches of the five-game fifty-over series against Sri Lanka, with scores of four, 60 and 10.
The entertaining left-hander is now in doubt for the entire five-match series against the West Indies.
The injury also throws a question mark over whether Warner will be fit for Australia's tour of India late next month.
