Farina calls for transfer tweaks

FED UP with the "crazy" wait for the leader of his cavalry, Sydney FC coach Frank Farina wants Football Federation Australia to look at tweaking the date of the A-League's transfer window.

The cellar-dwelling Sky Blues had gun striker Joel Griffiths signed, sealed and delivered on December 14.

Despite the fact Griffiths' contract with Shanghai Shenhua finished at the end of last year, he's not allowed to start with Sydney FC until Australia's transfer window opens on January 14.

Most Asian leagues' transfer periods have already started, while the English Premier League's silly season is in full swing.

Farina, who promised to attack the competition's transfer window "rock hard" and is still hoping to land a central defender this month, felt it was wrong for the FFA to force Griffiths to wait two weeks.

"I don't agree with the window here at the moment," Farina said after the Sky Blues' training session on Tuesday.

"It's not as if he (Griffiths) is still contracted to a club - but he can't start playing until the 14th which, for me, is crazy.

"It's strange that he can't play for those two weeks.

"It's a problem with the timing of the window. Sometimes it'll work for you and sometimes it won't.

"I think we can most probably tweak it and get it a bit better, but that's the way it is.

"... You're not always going to please everyone. At this stage, we're not pleased, so that's life."

Farina, whose side are at the foot of the table, has more pressing concerns in the form of Sunday's home clash with Melbourne Heart.

"We've just got to get that consistency. We've said that word so often over the past six weeks," Farina said.

"If we can maintain that consistency, we'll do well.

"It's one of those competitions where, on any given day, anyone can beat anyone.

"If you manage to get in the six, you've got a shot at the title."

Injured pair Fabio and Yairo Yau trained strongly on Tuesday and are expected to be available for the weekend's clash.

Farina would not be drawn on what role they'd play against the Heart.

"It's only Tuesday and the game's Sunday, so there's no point talking about who's going to start or who's going to be on the bench."

While the 48-year-old said the club were still hunting a centre back, he admitted: "it's a bit of a tall ask at this stage".
