EX-QUEENSLAND and Test speedster Mitchell Johnson will enjoy a homecoming of sorts after signing with the Brisbane Heat for the Big Bash League season.

Now based in Perth, Johnson was unveiled as the Heat's latest signing on Tuesday following his stint in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament for Mumbai Indians.

Johnson, 30, will link with the Heat following the birth of his first child in early December.

"Midge has a lot of mates in the team from his days in Brisbane and also with the Australian team so he will slot in beautifully into the group," Heat and Bulls' coach Darren Lehmann said.

"We're all very pleased for he and Jess to be starting their family soon, so we'll look forward to him enjoying his cricket with us once he's ready."

The left-arm speedster - who has not played for Australia since being injured in last November's tour of South Africa - will be back in action for Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the MCG starting on Thursday.

The Townsville-born Johnson has played 47 Tests, 112 one-day internationals and 28 Twenty20 games for Australia.

The former International Cricketer of the Year becomes the 16th player to sign with the Heat for the BBL which takes place in December and January.

They must sign 18 players by November 30.

Brisbane's roster also boasts the likes of Dan Vettori, Dan Christian, Ryan Harris, Ben Cutting, Luke Pomersbach, James Hopes, Shane Watson, Kemar Roach and Peter Forrest.
