AFL Teams - Round 23

By Laura Gardiner
30 August 2012 06:27PM EST

GEELONG superstar captain Joel Selwood has been named to return for a tough final-round showdown against Sydney at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

And Hawthorn has rushed forward line maestro Cyril Rioli back for a finals make-up defining launch of the final home-and-away round against West Coast on the big stage at the MCG on Friday night.

Rioli returns after just a fortnight out in rehabilitation for a cracked shoulder blade to face a top four deciding clash with the Eagles, who are flying after a shock thumping of Collingwood in Perth last Saturday night.

Selwood is back after being rested for the Cats’ regulation win over the Western Bulldogs last weekend, while Geelong also swung premiership back man Matthew Scarlett back in after a week out with soreness.

Young Cats on-baller Taylor Hunt also returns to lend his support to the blue-chip midfield brigade led by Selwood, Jimmy Bartel and decorated veterans Joel Corey and James Kelly.

SYDNEY named courageous warrior Jude Bolton to bolster the Swans’ tough on-ball division to face the reigning premiers, after he missed the past three matches with a knee injury.

But, the Swans copped a blow to their big man stocks losing key tall Sam Reid.

HAWTHORN is set to give livewire goal-sneak Rioli up until the last moment on Friday to prove his fitness for the blockbuster clash with the Eagles.

WEST COAST must contend with the league’s most imposing forward line of Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and possibly Rioli without important key defender Eric Mackenzie, who missed the trip to Melbourne because of a hamstring problem.

Mackenzie, the man most likely to have been given the job to try and curb the influence of the dangerous Franklin, was replaced in the Eagles side by fringe defender Mitch Brown.

The Eagles brought in Jacob Brennan to replace veteran winger Matt Rosa, who is set to miss the rest of the season with a broken collarbone, while out-of-favour spearhead Quinten Lynch missed out on selection for the second week running.

COLLINGWOOD high-flyer Andrew Krakouer has been named to make a dream comeback against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night, after six months of intense rehabilitation for a full knee reconstruction.

But, struggling key forward Chris Dawes has been dropped.

The Magpies also named premiership captain Nick Maxwell to return from a groin strain, while the Pies’ ruck stocks will be bolstered significantly by the return of veteran Darren Jolly from a week’s break.

Star Maggies half-forward Sharrod Wellingham was named despite suffering painful split webbing in his left hand, which required stitches.

FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon is likely to leave until the last minute decisions on superstar forward Matthew Pavlich and gigantic ruckman Aaron Sandilands before they are cleared to play against Melbourne on Saturday night.

Pavlich is battling hamstring and adductor problems, while Sandilands has emerged with more toe and foot problems after two big games back in action from a three-month lay-off.

The Dockers named the pair and will monitor their medical progress until into Saturday afternoon.

ESSENDON brought back midfielders Ben Howlett and David Myers for the Bombers’ final run of the 2012 season, after both recovered from soft tissue injuries.

Big Bombers forward Stewart Crameri was also named to face his side’s arch-rivals, despite suffering a knock to the shoulder last weekend.

CARLTON and ST KILDA will face off on Sunday in their final games for the 2012 season and the Blues will be hungry to send departing coach and playing great Brett Ratten out with a win.

The Blues decided against swinging key back man Michael Jamison back to face the Saints, preferring to err on the side of caution with the big defender’s troublesome hamstring.

Carlton added Mitch Robinson to replace young stopper Andrew McInnes, who ruptured the ACL in his knee during the Blues disappointing loss to Gold Coast last week.

The Saints brought in Justin Koschitzke, Jason Blake, Jason Gram and David Armitage for the last game of coach Scott Watters’ first season at the helm.

NORTH MELBOURNE decided against bringing back star on-baller Daniel Wells for the Kangas' clash with Greater Western Sydney on Saturday at Skoda Stadium.

Wells is battling a groin problem, with the 'Roos playing it safe so that he can be ready for a crunch elimination final appearance in two weeks.

PORT ADELAIDE regained midfielder Hamish Hartlett from a two-week suspension, while RICHMOND brought in emerging star Brandon Ellis to replace the hamstrung Matt White.
