TEST batsman Shaun Marsh has commenced his long road back into international ranks with a half-century for WA in the Sheffield Shield against Queensland in Brisbane.

Marsh, who is coming off a horror Test series against India and was sent back to state level to work on his technique, made 79 as Western Australia closed in on first innings points at the Gabba.

He received a life early on when he was dropped on 34 by Wade Townsend off the bowling of legspinner Cameron Boyce.

Marsh hit 13 fours amongst the 132 balls he faced before he was WA's third victim at 234.

His captain Marcus North fell almost straight after, for 35 runs.

At stumps on the second day, Western Australia was 4-250 - just two runs shy of taking first innings points.

Warriors allrounder Mitchell Marsh was not out on six and Adam Voges was on eight.

Queensland was bowled out for 251 earlier on Tuesday.

Marsh, 28, made just 17 runs in six innings against the Indians in Australia's 4-nil whitewash with scores of 0, 3, 0, 11, 3 and 0 at an average of 2.83 runs an innings.

His younger brother Mitchell was selected in Australia's one-day squad for the tri-series against India and Sri Lanka.
