Davis in GWS captaincy mix

GUN Greater Western Sydney recruit Phil Davis has emerged as a candidate to be a third member of the Giants historic first captaincy team.

Speculation is racing through AFL circles that the league’s newcomers will announce decorated former Brisbane on-baller Luke Power and recruited Western Bulldogs midfielder Callan Ward as joint captains.

Giants head coach Kevin Sheedy has already declared that he will unveil his captaincy and leadership group before commencement of the NAB Cup summer competition starting in the middle of February.

While appointment of Power, 32 and Ward, at just 21, appears a foregone conclusion it is understood that Giants management is contemplating a third co-captain.

A model of three co-captains was successfully adopted and run at Sydney under premiership coach Paul Roos from 2006 until last year when new boss John Longmire reverted to a stand-alone skipper, Adam Goodes.

Davis, also just 21, is believed to be a late bolter to be a third Giants co-captain ahead of prized and highest paid recruit Tom Scully.

Davis was the first Giants recruit revealed last year when he advised Adelaide Crows officials he would leave as an uncontracted player signed by GWS and announced before the end of home-and-away season his controversial departure.

The rangy key defender played just 18 senior games, with only three matches last year before he suffered a nasty season-ending shoulder injury in Adelaide’s 19-point Round 6 win over St Kilda at AAMI Stadium.

The courageous Canberra-born and North Adelaide first round pick at number 10 overall in the 2008 national draft, was somewhat of a shock Giants poaching recruitment when he disclosed intentions to join the new outfit early last August.

Davis had always been widely considered among Crows officials as a budding leader of the future.

Giants management has already confirmed that announcement and presentation of their inaugural leadership team will be made ahead of this month’s NAB Cup series launch.

The Giants enter the summer competition with triangular games against Callan’s old Bulldogs teammates and power unit Collingwood at Blacktown on Saturday February 19.
