O’Meara, 17, is the stunning midfielder who was one of the most hotly sought young talents ahead of a unique AFL mini-draft connected with formation of the league’s newest franchise Greater Western Sydney back in October.
Sportsnewsfirst.com.au reported early this month that the Suns and Adelaide Crows management had sought permission for the two bright young stars to taste AFL earlier than expected with games in the summer competition.
The AFL confirmed permission to the Suns and Crows late on Tuesday that the two gun youngsters would be allowed to play in the NAB series.
"Gold Coast's Jaeger O'Meara and Adelaide's Brad Crouch have been given permission to play in the 2012 NAB Cup after formal club requests," the league announced.
"O'Meara and Crouch are not eligible to join the senior lists until 2013, but were given permission to play to aid their development."
Suns officials believe a precedent was established last year when GWS played in the NAB competition last year, before the Giants had actually joined the AFL.
O'Meara and promising Crows recruit Crouch are ineligible to play in the AFL until next year because they are too young.
But Suns and Crows football management want O’Meara and Crouch to experience AFL intensity similar to the entire GWS outfit last summer.
The Giants officially join the AFL this year after a season in the newly formed North Eastern AFL last season.
Adelaide also sought league permission to play their GWS mini-draft recruit from North Ballarat.
Gold Coast snared the brilliant O'Meara by trading their pick number four in last year's national draft to the Giants.
The Crows had to give up their first selection at number 10 in the 2011 draft to secure Crouch, who is another looming midfield star.
The Suns are drawn in the opening round of triangular NAB Cup games against local rival Brisbane as well as Melbourne at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast for Saturday February 25.
Gold Coast has a second-week appointment with Geelong back at home again and then a third round engagement with Kevin Sheedy and his young giants in Albury on the Victorian and New South Wales border.
The Crows are at home for the three-way NAB opening for clashes with Port Adelaide and Carlton, before taking on Brisbane in Alice Springs a week later and then power club Collingwood at AAMI Stadium on Friday March 9.
