Birt eyes off Big Bash cash

THE Big Bash League's leading runscorer Travis Birt is probably joking when he says his eyes are on the cash that Twenty20 success can bring.

But the $20,000 Indian Premier League man can help his Hobart Hurricanes move a step closer to the lucrative T20 Champions League when they host the Sydney Sixers in Sunday's BBL semi-final at Bellerive.

The finalists automatically qualify for the Indian tournament, worth $2.5 million to the winner.

"Obviously (there's) the Champions League, I want to get heaps of cash," he told reporters on Saturday.

"I want to get as much cash as I can.

"I've got a house that I've got to pay off so if we can go over there and win it, that would be fantastic.

"But we've got to win a game of cricket tomorrow first."

Birt, who was picked up for his bargain price by the Delhi Daredevils last January, has smashed 334 runs at a strike rate of 176 in the Big Bash, undoubtedly boosting his asking price as T20 competitions boom around the world.

The 30-year-old, who moved to Western Australia to play his Sheffield Shield and one-day cricket this season, says the BBL has bolstered his chances of a late-career payday.

"I guess people have seen that it's not exactly a young man's game, you have a look at the champions who have come back and done well," he said.

"Hopefully, potentially, I could play for a while longer yet and everything that goes along with that. You've got the IPL and Champions League.

"But this is just a tournament that you really want to win."

The Sixers will come into the match confident after three straight wins, although they lost by 42 runs when Birt made 65 off 41 balls last time at Bellerive.

Hobart overcame some late tournament jitters with a nailbiting last-ball victory over the Melbourne Renegades on Wednesday.

Birt and Englishman Owais Shah have been the standouts in their side's unlikely run to a home semi, but the Hurricanes No.3 says he's not feeling any extra pressure.

"There's no expectations on me to do anything that I haven't already done," Birt said.

"There's more than me in the team and Owais.

"There's been a lot of pumped-up hype about us two doing well but there's a team of 11 out there."

A sellout crowd is expected for Sunday's match.
