A LAWYER for Floyd Mayweather Jr has pleaded no contest on his behalf under a plea deal to resolve a misdemeanor battery case stemming from a scuffle with a Las Vegas homeowner association security guard.

The 34-year-old Mayweather did not appear in person Friday.

He is due to start a 90-day jail sentence on January 6 after pleading guilty on December 21 to misdemeanor battery domestic violence and no contest to harassment in a separate case.

Mayweather acknowledged hitting his ex-girlfriend and threatening two of their three children during a September 2010 argument at the woman's home.

The looming jail sentence raises doubts about a long-anticipated fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

The plea deal has the boxer paying a $1,000 fine to avoid trial and more jail time.

Mayweather's lawyer declined comment.
