Fevola spotted trying to play pub pokies

UPDATED: TROUBLED AFL discard Brendan Fevola has denied he was asked to leave a Melbourne pub this morning because he had tried to hide his identity.

A spokesman for the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group has told Fairfax that Fevola was seen before 10am at the Berwick Inn in Melbourne’s south-east trying to play the gaming machines.

He was noticed after a staff member asked him to remove his hood as the hotel has a policy banning patrons wearing hoods up.

"It became apparent to staff at the venue it was Brendan Fevola and he had been recognised and he promptly left the venue," the spokesman said.

Fevola had been reportedly playing the machines for about 20 minutes.

But Fevola vehemently denied he had been asked to leave the venue, describing the allegations as "bullshit".

“I just had a jumper on. They didn’t ask me to leave or anything. I left by myself,” Fevola told Melbourne radio station MTR1377.

“I just went in and put some money in the Pokie machines, having a muck around and walked out, that was it.

“I walked in there, put in $50 and left.

“I can do whatever I want … the horses are the problem. I don’t understand why people don’t get this.”

The troubled former Carlton and Brisbane star went on the attack, clearly upset by this latest media interest in his private life.

“It’s a real sad state of affairs, the media in Melbourne I think. It’s an absolute joke - that you blokes are actually making a story out of this - it’s ridiculous," he said.

“I’m just a normal person now, who plays VFL football, I can do whatever I want - and it’s my money - whenever I want.

“I don’t understand what people have jumped up and down about - it’s got absolutely nothing to do with anyone."

When told there were many who had concern for the troubled forward's welfare, Fevola said, “Well they shouldn’t be worried. I’m happy as Larry.”

The ex-Brisbane Lion and Carlton forward is battling a serious gambling addiction which he admitted has cost him over $1 million.

He is due to be playing with the reserves for VFL side Casey Scorpions this weekend.

Independent MP Nick Xenophon appealed for the public not to immediately judge Fevola.

"I know some in the community will be tempted to shake their heads and blame Fevola for being 'weak' or 'giving in'," Xenophon said.

"We need to remember Brendan has an addiction and addicts aren't always able to exercise free will."

"Brendan has sought treatment for gambling addiction previously, and I would encourage him to seek further help to deal with this issue."

"I do believe in people taking personal responsibility for their lives.

"But the fact is that these machines are designed to be addictive. And right now 100,000 Australians are addicted to poker machines and a further 200,000 Australians are showing the signs of developing a full-blown addiction."

This week, Fevola split with his management company Velocity Sports.

Velocity say they sacked the key forward, but Fevola countered that he had dumped them.

Earlier this month, Crown Casino management asked Fevola to leave the venue, again without incident.

He had been playing poker.

Fevola is a self-confessed gambling addict who spent more than two months in a Brisbane rehabilitation clinic.

He has apparently asked bookies to refuse him financial credit.

Fevola is back from a short holiday in the United States and also admitted this month that he tried to kill himself last year after an argument with his wife.
